State Representative Demetrius Douglas has been appointed to the Georgia Council on Literacy by House Speaker Jon Burns. Douglas, a Democrat from Stockbridge, expressed gratitude for the appointment and emphasized the importance of improving literacy in Georgia.
“I want to thank Speaker Burns for appointing me to serve on the Georgia Council on Literacy,” said Rep. Douglas. “Improving literacy is essential to giving all Georgia students the tools they need to succeed. I look forward to working with my colleagues to find practical solutions that will help increase literacy rates across our state. Together, we can make a real difference in helping more students build the skills they need for a better future.”
The council was established through Senate Bill 211, passed during the 2023 legislative session and signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp. It comprises 30 members appointed by both the Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House. The council's primary responsibility is overseeing the implementation of reading instruction science in public schools throughout Georgia.
Douglas's term on the council will coincide with his service in the Georgia House of Representatives.
