On January 17, 2025, a joint press conference and award ceremony took place at the Georgia State Capitol. The event was hosted by Sen. Sonya Halpern (D–Atlanta), Rep. Marvin Lim (D–Norcross), and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). It recognized 15 high school students who won an art contest highlighting Georgia's State Parks and Historic Sites.
The initiative was launched by the DNR in collaboration with Sen. Halpern and Rep. Lim as part of Keeping Georgia Wild Day. The winning artwork was displayed during the event.
“These students have beautifully captured our state’s history, culture, and natural beauty, and we are honored to showcase their talents here at the Capitol,” said Sen. Halpern. She also acknowledged the efforts of the State Parks and Historic Sites Division of the Department of Natural Resources in preserving Georgia’s natural beauty.
The contest drew inspiration from a similar program organized by the National Park Service. It aimed to celebrate Georgia's state parks and historic sites while promoting creative expression among students. Over 100 participants submitted artwork using various mediums to reflect these important locations.
Sen. Sonya Halpern serves as Democratic Caucus Vice Chair for the 39th Senate District, which includes parts of Fulton County.
