The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced the awarding of two contracts focused on Random Clearing and Permanent Grassing along Interstate 16 in Treutlen and Emanuel Counties. This initiative will necessitate the closure of lanes and shoulders to successfully complete the project.

Clearing operations will target vegetation along the right of way from mile marker 67.5 to 84.5, covering wooded median sections as well. The importance of this clearing was highlighted during Hurricane Helene last year. Georgia DOT's objective is to remove any vegetation that may threaten drivers' safety and ensure that the Interstate 16 corridor remains open and operational for emergency services, motorists, and commercial vehicles during emergency situations.

The work is set to commence on April 8, 2025. The strategy involves starting on the westbound side at mile marker 84.5 and then progressing to the eastbound side starting at mile marker 67.5. The project is slated to be completed by the winter of 2026. Drivers should anticipate lane and shoulder closures in various locations on I-16 in the affected counties until the project concludes.

It should be noted that the work schedule is subject to changes due to weather conditions. Motorists are urged to prepare for potential delays, exercise caution, and maintain reduced speeds when navigating through the work zones. Staying attentive to workers is essential. For the latest updates on work status and traffic conditions, drivers are encouraged to call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app.
