Senate passes SB67 to boost voter confidence and election integrity

The Georgia Senate has recently passed SB67, which would require voters to provide a photo ID when requesting an absentee ballot.

According to legis.ga.gov, the bill to be entitled "Act to amend Chapter 2 of Title 21 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, relating to elections and primaries generally,” would also provide for requesting of absentee ballot applications through a web portal.

This bill would replace the existing process of signature verification, one of the vital elements leading to chaotic vote counting and decreased confidence in elections in the most recent election.

“It’s not about disenfranchising voters. It’s not about overly burdening the electorate. It’s about efficiency, integrity, allowing the Georgia public to have confidence in the vote,” Sen. Larry Walker, who sponsored Senate Bill 67, said.

If the bill becomes law, it would require polling officials to total the number of ballots that were cast by method, prior to reporting any results which could delay results being released by several days.

Senator Bill Cowsert, one of the 26 senators supporting the bill, remarked: "Give people the totals. Let people have the peace of mind that nothing's being done in the dark of night," an issue that Georgia elections faced in 2020, US News reported.
