The Clayton County Police Department are looking for answers after a College Park cellphone sale ended up deadly on the evening of Dec. 26.

Police said the shooting occurred Sunday night in the 1100 Block of Brookstone Road in College Park after a report was called in of someone being shot nearby, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. When police arrived at the scene, they approached a man lying on the street with a gunshot wound.

"Police said someone came to the victim's home to sell him a brand-new phone," Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

Though the victim and suspect had a conversation prior to the incident, police are unaware of what that conversation consisted of, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

Shootings in Atlanta increased by approximately 60% in 2021, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Dr. Karen Sullivan, Fulton County's chief medical examiner, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that although she performs death examinations across Fulton, Atlanta is the hot spot for deaths by homicide.

"Anecdotally, it seems as though the complexity of the homicides is increasing," Sullivan told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "Years ago … the vast majority of homicide cases due to gunshot wounds were one, maybe two — rarely three gunshot wounds. Now, it’s quite common for people to have been shot 10, 12 times."

Most shootings occur between people who know each other and not strangers, Atlanta Police Chief Rodney Bryant told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"The shootings that we continue to see, a good portion of them started out as just a conflict," Bryant said. "When people fail to have conflict resolution, this is what we’re seeing. This is the negative outcome of it."

Those with information relating to the incident are urged to contact the Clayton County Police Department at 770-477-3550, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
